Eponyms

Called Eponyms, many words tell interesting tales about their origins.Wittingly or unwittingly, few people and places have left their names for posterity through words that were coined after them. These words are derived from the names of real, fictional, mythical or spurious persons, places or characters, although many of these Eponyms come from the persons surnames.

Here is The List of Eponyms beginning with W.

Wednesday: Noun

The day of the week before Thursday and after Tuesday

This term is named after the Germanic God Woden, the God of wisdom, culture and war.

Winchester: Noun

1. (Also Winchester rifle) Trademark, a breech-loading, side action repeating rifle

2. (Also Winchester disk or drive) Computing, a disk drive in a sealed unit containing a high-capacity hard disk and read-write heads

The rifle was named after the American rifle manufacturer Oliver Winchester. The computer disk drive acquired the name because its original designation corresponded to the caliber of the rifle.
