This tense is used to speak about the action which took place in the past for some time.

Subject + was / were + verb + ing
I / he / she / it / all singular subjects + was + verb + ing
We / you / they / all plural subjects + were + verb + ing
Examples :
It was raining throughout the night.
I was reading a story for a long time yesterday.
They were playing football all evening yesterday.
I was working on my computer the whole day yesterday.
My teacher was teaching me Math for three hours last week.
We were waiting for you for one hour.
He was eating his meals for some time.
She was writing her exam in this hall.
They were making dolls when you called them.
It was walking along the bank of the river.
