Dead Horse

What is the meaning of flogging a dead horse?

By Yasuko, Japan (11th Dec. 2006).

There is no point in beating a horse that is already dead. So when you say that someone is flogging a dead horse what you are implying is that the person is wasting his time or effort trying to do something that is impossible. It can also mean to talk about things that no one is interested in anymore.

Here are a few examples.

* Rajah is asking for more funding for his project. I think he's flogging a dead horse.

* Talking about honesty to a bunch of politicians! That's what I call flogging a dead horse.

• Listen Linda, I am not interested in going to the U.S. So why do you flog a dead horse?
