What are the correct terms for the forward and Backslash as used in computing languages, Web addresses etc.?


The standard and long-established symbol / is known as a solidus, oblique dash or virgule. It is also called stroke or slash. The name forward slash was introduced simply to distinguish it from the backslash. This is much more recent. It originated in computing and we think it has no other name.
