The laughter with which his sallies were greeted excited him.



Sully : (verb)

( 1 ) Make something dirty

Stain

Ruin or destroy (someone’s reputation, etc…)

I shall never sully my hands by accepting a bribe.

Do not sully your reputation by doing something wrong.
