Units of English :


What is a UNIT?


A Unit is a basic part. Units make a word or a sentence complete.


How many Units are there in English?


There are FIVE UNITS.


1. Letter
2. Word
3. Sentence
4. Phrase
5. Clause


All these five Units make a sentence or a paragraph and so on.


Letters

Letters are otherwise known as ALPHABETS.

Alphabet consists of 26 letters.

These Alphabets can be written in two forms.

Capital letters and Small letters

Now a day these letters can also written in the form of cursive letters.

These letters can be classified into two groups.

• Vowels

• Consonants

Vowels : In the alphabets a, e, i, o and u are known as vowels.

Consonants : In the alphabets all other alphabets other than these vowels are said as consonants.

b, c, d, f ,g, h, j, k, l, m, n, p, q, r, s, t, v, w, x, y, z.

Words : Words are the combination of letters which give a specific meaning.

Examples :

Book

Chair

Pen

Table

Sentences : The words are formed in an order and gives a complete sense / meaning frame a sentence.

Every sentence begins with a Capital letter. Full stop or Exclamatory mark or a Question mark will be placed at the end of the sentence.

This sentence is of four types.

They are…

1. Assertive Sentence

2. Interrogative Sentence

3. Imperative Sentence

4. Exclamatory Sentence

1. Assertive Sentence :

A sentence that states or declares something is called as ASSERTIVE or DECLARATIVE Sentence.

Example :

The sun rises in the east. (Affirmative)

The earth is not flat. (Negative)

2. Interrogative Sentence :

A sentence that asks a question is called an INTERROGATIVE Sentence.

Examples :

What is the matter?

What is your name?

Where are you now?

3. Imperative Sentence :

A sentence that expresses a command, request, an entreaty or a desire is called an Imperative Sentence.

Examples :

Shut the door. (Command)

Lend me your pen, Please. (Request)

Help me, oh God. (Entreaty)

God Save the Queen. (Wish)

4. Exclamatory Sentence :

A sentence that expresses some strong or sudden feeling is called an Exclamatory Sentence.

Examples :

How hot it is!

What a clever boy you are!
