Use of A and AN :


  1. A and AN should be used to indicate the meaning of the words one, any, every and certain.


    Examples :

    He owns a car and two taxies.

    A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush.

    The Emden was a German ship.

    There was a hunter in the village.

    One day an old man came to my village.

    Once a hunter was living on the shores of Ganges.




  2. A and AN should be used before the positive and comparative degree.


    Examples :

    An Elephant is a strong animal.

    Hercules was a brave man.

    I am reading an interesting story.




  3. A or AN should be used after the verb TO BE CALLED.


    Examples :

    It is called a screw driver.

    it is called an Umbrella.




  4. A or AN should be used before the words FEW and LITTLE.


    Examples :

    I have a few rupees.

    He wants a little sugar for tea.

    A few students came to the class.
