This proverb illustrates the importance of time and also says that there is nothing which is more precious than time. The words TIME AND TIDE WAIT FOR NO MAN is due to the reason that the tides that come out in the sea are there forever and they do not stop or wait for anybody. There is a story in England where one of the king’s courtiers always kept on flattering the king. He said if the king orders everything in the world will stop. The King wanted to check it and he went to the seashore and ordered the waves to stop, but nothing happened. The King turned back to the courtier and said that time and tide wait for none and one day he will also die.
If we remain idle we waste our time and postpone things. Some times this procrastination is very bad. Many people lose their hard work because of postponing their duties. The importance of a minute can be learned from a person who missed the train due to a delay of one minute and had to postpone his whole journey. Those who remain idle or do not perform their duties in time are not only the destroyers of their own lives but also of the nation. Those who waste their youth by indulging in unwanted activities fail to have a pleasant and contented life.
Tit for Tat.
This saying indicates that a person takes revenge upon one who does some harm to him to who causes or puts in some danger. By taking revenge the person tries to soothe his aching heart and pacifies his mental imbalance or humiliation that one causes. When a person is badly hurt or put into trouble by others, one gets angry and loses the mental imbalance. So instead of pardoning one damages physically.
There is a tale in Panchatantra in which there was a rogue elephant which always troubled the smaller animals like the frog, the ants and the birds who have laid their eggs. Once he shook a tree for fun and broke the eggs of a bird. The bird was very angry and wanted to take revenge. It had a discussion with the frog and the ant and then they decided upon a plan. The bird came our and pecked at the elephants eyes with his sharp beak. The ants climbed and bit him very much. The elephant wanted to wash his head in water. But he was blinded and could not see anything. At this time the frog started croaking at the top of the mountain. The elephant followed the frogs’ voice and climbed the mountain and fell down from there and died. Thus the bird and the rest of the animals took their revenge against the rogue elephants for his misdeeds.
