A List of Eponyms



Called Eponyms, many words tell interesting tales about their origins.Wittingly or unwittingly, few people and places have left their names for posterity through words that were coined after them. These words are derived from the names of real, fictional, mythical or spurious persons, places or characters, although many of these Eponyms come from the persons surnames.

Tantalize: Verb

Torment or tease with sight or promise of something that is unobtainable, withheld or out of reach

Greek mythology tells us that Tantalus, the mythical King of Phrygia, was punished for his crimes by being provided with fruits and water the receded when he reached for them.



Teddy Bear: Noun

A soft toy or bear

US President Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919) was an enthusiastic bear-hunter, affectionately known as Teddy. Somehow, the name of this avid bear hunter stuck as an appellation for the toy bear.



Thursday: Noun

The day of the week before Friday and after Wednesday

For this day of the week, we need top thank Thor – the Norse god of thunder who gave us this day.



Tuesday: Noun

The day before Wednesday and after Monday

Tiw is the name of the Germanic God of war and the sky.
