Eponyms



Called Eponyms, many words tell interesting tales about their origins.Wittingly or unwittingly, few people and places have left their names for posterity through words that were coined after them. These words are derived from the names of real, fictional, mythical or spurious persons, places or characters, although many of these Eponyms come from the persons surnames.

Valentine: Noun

A card sent(often anonymously)on St. Valentine’s day(February 14) to a person one loves or is attracted to, a person to whom one sends such a card

This term was named after a St. Valentine, a third century Christian martyr who finished his life in support of his love with a girl.




Vandal: Noun

A person who deliberately destroys or damages public or private property

The Vandals were a Germanic people who ravaged Gaul, Spain, Rome and the North Africa in the 4th and 5th centuries.




Venereal: Adjective

1. Of or related to venereal disease

2. (Formal) Of or relating to sexual desire or sexual intercourse

This word is derived from Venus, the Roman Goddess of love.
