Meaning:

Someone claiming an overwhelming advantage over an opponent; someone claiming that something in their possession actually belongs to them whether this is the case or not.


Example:

Having found the wad of $5,000 cash on the street, Jethro thought that it was his - that possession is nine tenths of the law.


Origin:

The original nine points of the Law were:

(1) a lot of money

(3) a good cause

(4) a good lawyer
